In this country enslaved black people were strictly prohibited from having any type of meeting connections with each other except for so-called religious purposes, usually at established places of worship owned by their captors.

As early as 1840 there are several accounts of African-Americans in “free states” regularly holding gatherings which could well be considered the prerequisites to present-day, conferences, and conventions

Because of racial discrimination, organizations, such as the National Medical Association ( www.nmanet.org ), the nation’s largest and oldest organization representing African American physicians and the National Bar Association ( www.nationalbar.org ), a network of 67,000 predominantly African-American lawyers, judges, law professors, and law students, were created.

Segregation and “Jim Crow” policies lead to the development of historic fraternities and sororities known as the “Divine Nine”
